The Embed pathway is for anyone who is responsible for managing or supporting others (e.g. supervisors, team leaders, first level managers), or anyone aspiring to develop their knowledge beyond the Explore pathway. This pathway looks at the practical implementation of AI solutions, and the risks and challenges that can come with this.

If you aren't sure you understand any of the content, jump back to the Explore pathway and use the resources there to develop your knowledge before carrying on.

Step 1 - AI in Scotland
Read

The Scottish AI Alliance have developed this introductory guide to highlight the opportunities and benefits of AI, as well as the risks and ethical considerations that must be factored in.

The guide also looks at the current use of AI across Scotland – pay particular attention to the ‘healthcare’ section.

Task
Your organisation may also have it’s own guidance on how to use AI safely with consideration of risks and ethical factors. Find out what support is available locally and ensure your colleagues are also aware of this.

The Scottish AI Register provides information on the AI systems in use or in development within the Scottish public sector. For each AI system on the register, there is a helpful breakdown of the data sets used, how the system works and how human oversight is factored in.

Browse the register to find relevant examples to help you understand AI in practice.

Question
Having explored the examples on the register, where do you think there might be opportunities to utilise AI across your work or the services you provide?
Step 3 - Attitudes Towards AI
Question

AI technologies are becoming more present in our health and social care services, for example, in clinical diagnosis and early detection, virtual care and the production of predictive analytics. People have a wide range of feelings about this. Some are excited about the possibilities AI brings, while others feel uncertain or even concerned.

What about the people around you? What have you heard from your colleagues? And how do the individuals who use your organisation’s services feel about AI technologies? Take a moment to reflect on the different perspectives. Understanding these views is an important part of embedding a supportive approach moving forwards.

Earlier this year, CAST ran a survey to gain insights into the most current AI needs, behaviours, concerns and priorities across the social sector. This helpful blog provides a summary of their findings:

Task
Think about how you can use the questions and themes from the CAST survey to start meaningful conversations with your colleagues about AI technologies. What are they excited about? What worries do they have? What support might they need as AI becomes more common across their work?
Step 4 - AI: Reshaping the Workplace
Reflection
AI is becoming more visible across workplaces, for example in the automation of routine tasks, improving decision-making, and changing how teams collaborate.

What innovative uses of AI tools and/or technologies are emerging within your service or team?

Task

As you have read in the above article, AI and advanced technologies are transforming the ways we, and other sectors, work and thrive.

Take a moment to complete the following tasks to explore how AI is supporting and enhancing the tasks we perform in the workplace.

  • Identify at least one AI technology which could optimise processes, support existing resources, or enhance collaboration.

  • Identify one way you could support and empower your workplace in the understanding and engagement with AI.

Step 5 - AI in Action: Scotland's Public Services (New)
Reflection

Many organisations are beginning to explore how AI could help improve services and reduce administrative workload.

Think about the services your team or organisation provides. Are there tasks that are repetitive, time-consuming, or rely heavily on manual processes?
